#HAWMC Day 6:

wego day 6

Date: April 6, 2033

Just spent a wonderful Spring Break at the beach with all the family together!  What a treat to have kids and grandkids all in one place!  I brought some scrapbooks to help pass the time if we had any rainy days and am I glad I did!

Yesterday, it was a blustery day so out came the scrapbooks.  The grandkids had so much fun laughing over how we dressed and what their parents looked like as children.  Then one of the kids asked “Is that a phone hanging off Aunt KC’s belt in this picture?”  I had to look closely to see what he was talking about….then I remembered….it was an insulin pump.  Haven’t thought about one of those in years!

I looked up at KC and her eyes grew wide.  I took a deep breath and said “In the old days, there was a disease call Type 1 diabetes and it was treated by giving people insulin.  The thing on Aunt KC’s belt used to give her insulin.”   One of KC’s kids said “But my mommy doesn’t wear that thing now?”  “You are right, sweetie..she doesn’t need to any more.”  Then we turned the pages of the scrapbooks until we got to ones of the Walks to Cure that we participated in many times.  I said  “See these pictures?  We raised money every year to help find a cure for Type 1 diabetes….and it worked…we finally did it!  So now KC and all the other people who used to have Type 1 no longer have to rely on insulin pumps, or shots….and now there is a vaccination so that no kids will ever have to….”

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw my son take a lick of his daughter’s ice cream cone….but that’s another story.

The beach is calling….gotta go!
