#HAWMC Day 12 Hindsight

WEGO day 12

It has been said that “hindsight is 20/20”–we can see more clearly after we’ve done something than when we are in the midst of doing it.  So in hindsight, what could I tell myself about my daughter and Type 1 diabetes back on December 20, 2010.

  1. Take a deep breath.
  2. Yes, this is scary and sad.
  3. But she’s going to be okay.
  4. However, you are not going to get a good night’s sleep for a looooooooong time.
  5. She will amaze you with her strength, her attitude, her heart.
  6. Sadly, someone else you know will be diagnosed soon as well.
  7. But that child will have your daughter as a role model.
  8. You will feel very alone.
  9. You will be angry.
  10. You will spend hours searching for answers, cures, improved technology.
  11. Those hours will result in meeting (virtually) some amazing people.
  12. Those on-line friends will “get it”…they know exactly what you are feeling and are ready to offer support.
  13. It doesn’t really get better; you will just develop better skills.
  14. And finally, don’t ever forget “kid first, diabetes second.”  She deserves the life she was always meant to have.
